View Full Version : Roots coming out of stems everywhere???

I have what looks like roots coming out of the stems of several of my plants
(Cabomba, Ludwigia, Ambulia) well above the 100% flourite substrate. The
tank is a 75g with almost 3.5 watts/g and co2 injection. I had been using
flourish at the recommended dosage for fertilization, but in the last week
started using pmdd... This started happening before the switch. I've tried
looking around for ideas at the krib but didn't find anything. Is this
because of something I am doing or not doing? Aside from looking kind of
strange the plants seem to be growing very well...
Thanks,
Ron Nelson

No - this is quite normal - nothing to worry about. The plants are just
picking up additional nutriants through these sources.

I have exactly the smae thing on the same plants in my 77g. It showed up
after I started the DIY CO2 and using PMDD. They grew well prior to that
without the roots hanging off the stems.

From my experience this happens when there are excess nutrients in the
water and the plants throw out roots to suck up more of them.

So I'm over fertilizing. Which means I should cut down on my PMDD right? My
PMDD doesn't have traces in it and I had been trying to achieve the 5-10 ppm
of Nitrates that I have seen recommended... But with no success my Nitrates
are always 0... Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Ron

Ron,
Just one person said your nutrients were too high. The rest said roots were
normal. I vote for "roots are normal" since every stem plant I've ever had sent
them out.
You said, "My PMDD doesn't have traces in it". That doesn't sound good. The
trace element fertilizer is a core component of PMDD. Can you clarify that
statement?
You said, "I had been trying to achieve the 5-10 ppm

This unrelated to trace element fertilizer. Nitrates approach zero when plants
suck out all that the fish waste can produce. Many of us have to dose Nitrates
in order to raise them back up. I have to add 3/4 teaspoon per week to keep them
a bit under 10 in my 72 gallon tank, even with lots of fish. Are you dosing
nitrates in your mix?

Dave
Sorry I wasn't very clear in my last post... I have kept my traces
separate from my pre-mixed PMDD... My pre-mix PMDD does have Nitrates in it.
I followed the recipe here http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/pmdd.htm and
then chose to mix everything together except for the traces... Which I have
been adding separately. Maybe I need to mix everything separately and try
dosing that way? Again the plants are doing great and growing like crazy,
And my fish seem to be doing great. My water tests always come back Ph about
6.8-7.0, Kh 6, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, and Nitrate 0... It's just that the
roots on the stems are a little ugly to me... And that may just be because
its not something I had seen in various photos I've seen on the web... Maybe
I'm just being too picky?

I would like to second Dave's point. I have 30 different plants in my 55gal
tank and Hygrophila polysperma, Ludwigia Repens and Water wisteria are the
worst in putting out roots everywhere. Cabomba puts out root only when it
reaches top surface.
Hope this helps.

One issue at a time. Your nitrates are zero. This is an unhealthy state for
higher plants. Slowly increase your nitrate dosing to get to 5-10 ppm. Algae
problems will begin to diminish.

I vote for normal on Cabomba.

Dave,
I'll go ahead and start dosing nitrate separately. And go from there.
Thanks for the help,
