Azalea and lace bugs

I need to treat my azaleas soon and I'm having difficulty finding the
product Cygon by Dragon. This product is a systemic insecticide and
very effective when used properly with the right timing. Can anyone
suggest an alternative systemic insecticide that is equally effective?
Contact sprays, unfortunately, have not been very effective in the
past. The lace bug is very destructive and tough. I live in east
Tennessee, near Knoxville. Thanks.

I have the same problem and Cygon was also suggested to me by a
well-respected nursury here in the Houston area.

Cygon is manufactured by Bonide Products, Inc. Since they're located
in Oriskany, NY, it's hard to believe you can't find it available
somewhere in Tennessee since it seems readily available way down here
in Texas.

The active ingredient in Cygon is Dimethoate. If the above fails,
perhaps you can find it under another product name from another
company. (Try a Google search on the Dimethoate.

Incidently, The folks at Cornelius Nursury also suggested I treat my
Azaleas monthly (after the Cygon treatment) with Fertilome Liquid
Systemic Fungicide.

Thanks! I emailed Dragon with no response, but I will try Bonide. I
am bit confused about the word "Cygon" and thought it was a Dragon
product (or perhaps Bonide bought Dragon.) We do have mildew
concerns, but the azaleas get full sun which helps with that concern.

If you time things right insecticidal soap will control them
Be aware you need late spring and late summer applications.
If you need something more noxious acephate works very well(orthene)
please take personal protection seriously.
Read and follow label directions, be aware of what your overspray may harm.

Whitish specks on the upper surface of leaves and dark spots
varnish-like on the bottom are symptoms of rhododendron and azalea lace
bugs. They are more prevalent on certain varieties and on plants grown
in sunny areas. When damage first appears, it may be controlled by any
of a number of contact insecticides. I have used malthion with success.
Care must be taken to spray the lower surfaces of the leaves where the
lace bugs live.
