lobelia cardinalis rotting roots..help!

My lobelia cardinalis plants were rotting at the base of the trunk...they
formed reddish brown blotches on the trunks where leaves used to be. One
plant was detatched from it's "trunk" and floating, the other plant came out
easily from the substrate (these plants were planted about a month ago) The
third one seemed to be anchored down securely so I left it...hopefully it
has established good roots. I pinched some daughter shoots off one of the
plants and planted these. It's weird why they were rotting since the tops
were growing slowly but well. I trimmed the rotting stuff off the trunks and
replanted. Why did this happen? Did I bury too much of the trunk? (2 inches)

Dave, mine did the same thing, so I left mine floating for a while until
they recovered and then only planted a small portion of the roots. It
appears to be doing OK will know more later.

Hmm..maybe I planted too much of the roots. Well the offshoots that I
planted are floating anyways so we'll see what happens to both of ours.

You got yours from Big Al's, right? And looking from your website, they
might still be in "emersed" mode(I still see the purple leaves, check out
www.e-aquaria.com to see the submersed form). Just leave it be for awhile
and they will recover.

Yeah I got mine from Big Al's. All the older leaves have fallen off
actually. But the rotting really worried me! I cut all that off and
replanted...hopefully it'll do fine now.
