Shell Ginger

[SUNSHINE]

I have just purchased a ginger bulb and would like some advice on how to
grow it, I get some bad frosts at times but can put it under trees, does it
like shade and should I wait till winter is past before planting it out,
some advice as to the size it will grow and it's requirements will be
appreciated..

I don't know about "shell ginger" but if you are talking about ginger
root used in asian cooking (zingiber officinale) then it is a tropical
or nearly tropical plant whcih occurs naturally in rainforests but is
grow in similar regions around the world. It requires hot conditions
and high humidity especially in summer. Definitely not frost hardy. If
you get heavy frost I think you will need a heated glasshouse.

It grew down my place in the South Coast under light shade of spotted gum.
It did not reach the size of the plants I grew at Ourimbah, in a sheltered
spot. However I must say that there it took over rather a bit. The way it
grew there reminded me of bamboo! enough said! There it was good for
producing vast quantities of fibrous mulch, but even there it jammed my
rover mulching producer very frequently so I gave up.

I am now fighting blackberries with grazon in Bodalla NSW..

Shell ginger is the common name for Hedychium speciosum. Is this what you
are refering to? It is a beautiful ginger (non-edible) growing to about 8
feet here in Melbourne. I have seen it growing where it gets some sun, but
not full sun - though that may be ok too, for all I know.
