Interesting article on new cherry tomato raisin developed in Israel.
(who knew there was such a thing?)

Eating your vegetables just got a whole lot healthier. An Israeli
company has just created a new tasty tomato that is high in natural
antioxidants that can help treat and prevent disease.

Naturally bred to include high amounts of the compound lycopene,
previously available only as a dietary supplement, the
Israeli-developed Lyc-O-Mato brand self-dried cherry tomato raisin
will now be available as a food additive.

Lycopene is a nutrient and antioxidant that is naturally occurring in
small quantities in vegetables such as tomatoes. It has been suggested
that it can help treat cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes,
osteoporosis, and even male infertility. It is also useful in
supporting skin health.

This idea is still born as far as I'm concerned until the Palestinians
get their land back. I will buy nothing Israeli, although I know many
good people live there. That should be enough to derail the group for
awhile.

That said, we are talking about "the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)".
This new tomato allows you to get the same nutrition by eating fewer
tomatoes? Why would you want to do that?

If they marketers found away to make cardboard taste like tomatoes, I
would probably eat it. But no, they have come up with a way to make
tomatoes taste like cardboard.

In the mean time, enjoy real, short shelf-life tomatoes, while they are
in season.

Uh, oh! So much for our relationship.

Suggestion: Do a little research rather than relying on shrill Arab
lies; they are expert at manipulating media and people.

Don't bother to reply, as I will no longer be reading your posts.

Jews and Moslems lived together for fifteen hundred years. Then the UN
said to the Palestinians, this land is no longer yours. How many of you
would let foreigners chase you from your land? In the Nakba, in 1948,
Palestinians fled for their lives. They are not allowed to return. Under
international law, this is illegal. Israel is in defiance of at least 2
UN resolutions for Israeli withdrawal from land under Israeli
"occupation". Resistance to Israeli occupation is termed terrorism.
Israelis have F-16 jets and Abrams tanks. Palestinians have baskets with
bombs in them. Peace groups in Israel have had hand grenades thrown at
them. Yitzhak Rabin, Prime Minister of Israel, was assassinated because
he proposed peace, not a just peace, but peace. Rachel Corrie, an
American peace activist was run over by an armored Caterpillar tractor
that was going to destroy a home with a family inside it. The
documentary, "Death in Gaza" (HBO) describes James Miller and Saira Shah
attempt to give a balance view of the conflict. Miller was killed by
Israeli forces. Israel's offer of peace is what "white" South Africa
offered black Africans, apartheid. It wasn't acceptable then. It's not
acceptable now.

And, sadly, The Queen of the Underworld, Persephone has shown the same
lack of flexibility as the state she promotes.

If only we (UN) in 1948 gave the estranged Jewish population some of
Argentina all this would be mute. But the prefix holy means many must
die. I always thought North Dakota would suffice and we would some how
be vacationing there now and purchasing citrus.

If some one took my land I'd fight especially if the water was taken.

Hope Billy and Persephone work it out.

Meanwhile I've been invited to camp David to work this all out.
Ya Right.

Ethnic cleansing aside, it's a shame that Persephone just presented us
with advertising copy (see site above). It appears that Israeli
advertising is just as misleading as American advertising. The phrase
"can help treat and prevent disease" is just the kind of pharmacological
representation that the FDA has been fighting with food supplements for
years. It sounds good but means nothing and, no proof will be offered.
Turns out lycopene is more available when the tomatoes are cooked into a
sauce.

Oh, Charlie, if your there. I need to work on my green beans a little
more. I usually screw things up the first couple of times and the green
beans were no exception. I served them with Brazilian black beans and
rice (see below), which uses oranges. I thought it would be nice to have
orange and lemon flavors on the same plate. I guess I over "lemoned" the
beans. The criticism I got was that the "Lovey-poo" couldn't taste the
beans. Next time I'll try to mute the lemon by not using any of the
zest. I'll get it right eventually.

I only used a couple of oranges for this recipe. It still came out
pretty orangey:-) I did use some segments as garnish.

Brazilian-Style Black Beans and Rice

Serving Size : 8
Beans Citrus
ham Oranges
Raisin Rice

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 Lb Dried Black Beans -- soaked and drained
1 Ham Bone
2 Quarts Water
1 Tbsp Mustard Seed
1 Tbsp Dried Oregano
2 Clove Garlic -- lightly crushed
2 Bay Leaves
2 Tbsps Salt
1/4 cup Raisins
8 Oranges
2 cup Rice -- cooked

Combine the beans, bones, water, mustard seed, oregano, garlic, and
oregano in a large pot. Cook uncovered over medium-low heat 3-4 hours
or until the beans are soft, stirring occasionally.

Remove the bay leaves and the ham bone. Use a stick blender to puree
some of the beans, leaving most of the beans whole.

Remove any meat from the ham bone and add it back to the beans.

Add the raisins.

Let cook again over low heat another 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring every 15
minutes or so to prevent sticking.

Wash the oranges carefully and remove the zest in long thin strips.
Then peel the oranges and remove the segments. Squeeze the juice from
the segmented oranges over the segments.

Immediately before serving, top the hot cooked rice with the beans.
Sprinkle all the zest over the beans.

Losing your dream is hard Charlie. Persephone is a good person but she
is looking for Zero Mostel and finding Moshe Dayan, who would look more
comfortable in a panzer tank.

The American government looked the other way when Saddam Hussein was
gassing the Kurds. What do you think they would do for the "only
democracy" in the middle east? Give them a couple of extra weeks to use
cluster weapons, maybe?

Logic won't work with Persephone, she has an emotional connection that
will be hard for her to break.

You got it my friend, loud and clear. Unfortunately so did Cynthia

Rose,

You are an idiot. I hope you never get to taste any Israeli products. Maybe you
should offer the Palestinians a home in your town. Who cares what you think about
Israel's policies. You obviously know nothing about the situation over there.
Your
comments don't belong in a gardening site.

Here is a plan:

The United States should BUY from Mexico a strip
of land along the Mexican / U.S. border about 10
miles wide. The U.S. could then tell Israel that
this is their new "Promised Land". The Jews
would leave the Middle East. The Jews would have
a new group of people to exploit and they would
serve as a buffer to help prevent the invasion of
the United States by poor Mexicans. Those Jews
know how to build fences and walls. The land is
mostly hot and dry desert type climate which the
Jews are used to. If the Jews insisted on
fighting a war, they could go up to Utah and pick
on the Mormans. Joe Lieberman could satisfy his
political ambitions and run for President of the
new "Promised Land". A lot of issues would be
solved.

The "Promised Land" next to "Jesus Land"? Hmmm.
I think the thing is this concept of an ethnically pure state. The idea
was tried in the first half of the 20th century and got pretty nasty
reviews. How about, "you can be in my dream, if I can be in yours". Of
course this conflict is no more about religion than it was in Northern
Ireland. It is plain ol' greed and desire. I say, go back to the way it
was. One country, with life, liberty and, justice for all. But maybe
that's just me.

Well, gardeners do nurture and try to bring harmony out of chaos. A
gardener of humanity, if you like. Where the harvest is peace and
contentment.

A tomato (Israel's Lyc-O-Mato) was the entry point for this thread.
Since the original post, I have give two reasons for shunning this
particular tomato (1) political (I don't support fascists) and, (2)
misrepresentation of Lyc-O-Mato's nutritional value.

I am very pleased to say, we already have Palestinian neighbors, thank
you. Christian Arabs who also were chased from their homes by the IDF.

Israel obviously doesn't care about what I think, or even what the UN
General Assembly thinks. They (Israel) claim that God is on their side.
Hmmm. Where have I heard that before?

Your right, this is not the venue for this discussion but I would be
curious to know what factual basis you have for dismissing me as an
idiot. I presume you have reasons and that this isn't just another
instance of divine revelation or howling at the Moon.

Hey you Nazi putz. I suggest we give the Palestinians a nice homeland in
Deutchland.

As far as exploiting the Mexicans, certain American conglomerates do a good
job of that already. They don't need Israeli help.

Nobody on this gardening site should really care about your anti-semetic
predjudices. You can brand the Israeli's as facists, but I think they are just
defending their country.

More t han likely they were fleeing from the civil wars between Palestinians
many of whom have as much contempt for Christians as Jews.

Why should they care about the UN which is filled with Moslem countries
bent on destroying the Jewish State.

Well, at least they don't think there are 30 virgins waiting for them in heaven

First of all, you admire Finkelstein, who in my opinion is also an idiot.

Second, you know nothing about the history of the Middle East region,
but are ready to believe the bull shit propaganda put out by anti-semites,
and other twisted people.

Thirdly, you are upsetting this forum by bringing in your political views
for which I particularly don't give a damm.

I think I will run down to the grocery and buy some Jaffa oranges.

What I initially said about the perfidious Israeli tomato was," This
idea is still born as far as I'm concerned until the Palestinians get
their land back. I will buy nothing Israeli, although I know many good
people live there."

Your response was,"You are an idiot."

You have failed to substantiate you assertion through fact or logic,
leaving me with the inescapable conclusion that you are a bigoted
blowhard of the worst type.

By all means, let's return to gardening.

I'm sorry everybody. The man called me anti-Semitic. I guess I turned
over one too many rocks. Do I have to declare myself non-anti-Semetic to
this cretin? I'm better than no one, and no one is better than me.

As far as my Christian Arab Palestinian neighbors are concerned, they
just want to go back to their homes in Palestine. The homes that they
are barred from by Israel.

Hey, how about one country with justice and freedom for all?

What a schmuck you are Sherwin.

Not arguing that there was plenty of nastiness, but it seems to me
like there's more than enough to go around, rather than attach it all
at the feet of one side. In fact, looking at the numbers kind of puts
a different slant on who's more interested chasing whom from their
land?

Number of Arabs in Israel, before 1947: 800,000
Number of Arabs in Israel, after 1947: 160,000

Number of Jews in West Bank before 1947 100,000
Number of Jews in West Bank after 1947: 0

"Z" (not Greek are you?)

First off, you are using the word Jew where you should be using the word
Zionist. All Zionists are Jews, but not all Jews are Zionists. Some Jews
feel it isn't right to throw a man out of his house so that you can have
a house. Can you imagine Zero Mostel doing that?
>
> Number of Arabs in Israel, before 1947: 800,000
From what I've read, 800,000 are the number of Palestinians who fled the
area designated for the Zionists.

The largest single expulsion of the war began in Lydda and Ramla July
14, 1948. 60,000 inhabitants of the two cities were forcibly expelled on
the orders of Ben-Gurion and Yitzhak Rabin.

Altogether 200,000-230,000 Palestinians left in this stage, according to
Morris ([3], p. 492). According to Historian Ilan Pappe, "In a matter of
seven (April -November 1948) months, five hundred and thirty one
villages were destroyed and eleven urban neighborhoods emptied [...] The
mass expulsion was accompanied by massacres, rape and [the] imprisonment
of men [...] in labor camps for periods [of] over a year."[9]

Some were too old or too sick to run.
>
> Number of Jews in West Bank before 1947 100,000

> Number of Jews in West Bank after 1947: 0
There are over 260,000 Israeli settlers living in the West Bank today
(2007), as well as around 185,000 Israeli Jews living in Israeli-annexed
East Jerusalem.

How would you feel if you were a white boy living in the black part of
town after the KKK had a lynching? You had nothin' to do with it, buuuut
it might be prudent to take a short vacation.

In any event, do these displaced Jews have the right of return? Hmmm?

What Israel is doing is (1) aggrandizing itself by conquering land
through (2) ethnic cleansing. Both of which are illegal by international
law. Ethnic cleansing is being implemented by bull dozing homes (such as
Rachel Corrie was trying to protect), up-rooting olive orchards,
installation of Israeli only roads, and constant military attacks.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Article 13.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence
within the borders of each state.

(2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his
own, and to return to his country.

Israel had a cease fire from Hamas until Saturday 10 June 2006 when the
Palestinian Islamist group Hamas shelved a 16-month-old truce after
Israeli attacks on Gaza killed 10 people, including women and children
on a beach outing.

A child, Huda Ghalya, wept for her parents and siblings killed by the
attack.

If their homes were in Bethlehem or Nazereth, there are no laws prohibiting
them from living there. The Christian population of those towns used to be
in the majority, but the Moslems have made their lives miserable, and now
they are in the minority.

Israel is the only democracy in the middle east. It is the Jewish
homeland, and the Israeli's want to keep it that way. The Arabs
have their choice of living in numerous countries surrounding Israel.
The same is not true for Jewish people, almost a million of them were
forced out of their ancestral homes (some have lived there for two
thousand years) by the Arabs and forced to flee to Israel. Arabs
living in Israel enjoy the same rights as Jews, except they cannot
serve in the military. I suggest you study up on these things before
you go spreading your stupid predjudices on gardening sites.

You forgot to mention that there were a series of rockets fired at Israel
from Gaza, before the Israeli attack on Gaza. But of course, we do not
want to hear about those things.

Are you going to continue arguing politics on this garden site? I'm sure
most people are sick of this stuff. As long as you keep putting out your

Your concept consists of using foul language. You do not answer
any of my claims directly, so you never opened a dialog.

Well, I see you have made a real study of this finding every wacko web site you
can
to foster your case. I suggest you take your bullshit and move it out of

Why don't you volunteer to go to the Middle East and help these people, instead
of spouting your propaganda bullshit on this gardening site. The only one who
should be embarrased is you, who is annoying the rest of us with your tirade.

You seem to be able to dig up every kook in sight. Sure there are people
not happy with Israel's policies, just like there are people who hate the

Are you one of those Russian Zionists thugs, Sherwin? Then you must love
Avigdor Lieberman (born on 5 June 1958 in Kishinev, Moldavian SSR,
Soviet Union) is an Israeli politician and leader of the Yisrael Beytenu
party. He has served as the Minister of Strategic Affairs and as a
Deputy Prime Minister of Israel since November 2006.

In 2003, Ha'aretz reported that Lieberman called for thousands of
Palestinian prisoners held by Israel to be drowned in the Dead Sea and
offered to provide the buses to take them there (This includes the women
and children. God, he is really butch, isn't he?).

In May 2004, he said that 90 percent of Israel's one million Arabs would
"have to find a new Arab entity" in which to live beyond Israel's
borders. "They have no place here. They can take their bundles and get
lost," he said.

Remember, these are the folks who have lived in Palestine since before
dirt and the UN General Assembly thinks that they have the right of
return but fascist Israel is supported by corporate fascist America.

By the way, what right does Israel have to decide anything? I'm older
than they are.

Five? I thought be fruitful and multiply was just a suggestion not a
commandment. As far as being crazy, that sounds like a completely
rational reaction to what is being presented to us as reality. Your
reflexes are fine.

This is easy, if your sick. Hang your cap on a bed post and drink Irish
whiskey ad libitum until you see 2 caps. Continue pro re nata until you
feel better.

Actually, if there is an Irish Pub near by (within crawling distance)
you could hasten yourself there, salute the Queen, in the Republic's own
inimitable fashion, and render your self progressively bellicose,
lachrymose, and comatose.

Lastly, for spiritual fodder, remember the words of Molly the Great:

"It's a little-known fact that defending civil liberties can also be a
whale of a lot of fun, requiring only beer, imagination and a mild
disrespect for authority to become a genuinely entertaining and even
riotously funny pastime. One is not required to like the disgusting
specimens whose rights are being violated. In fact, one is, thanks to
the First Amendment, perfectly free to denounce them with splendid
invective".

Well, just to pick on this point; that's the same kind of broadbrush
tarring of some group of people for the actions of a few that has kept
mankind up to its collective neck in blood for ten thousand years. Do
you have any reason to believe that the individuals who would profit
from your buying this tomato are in any way responsible for the plight
of the average Palestinian? How do you know the tomato was not in fact
developed and marketed by Israelis of Arabic descent? In fact, you
have no knowledge of the individuals associated with this tomato, but
since they can be denoted as "Israeli", that's enough to render them
subject to collective punishment. Wouldn't you question the strategy
of boycotting Microsoft products, solely on the grounds of the Iraqi
War?

For a nonhypothetical example, take the recent decision by British
academics to boycott Israeli university academics. Just who do they
think is the liberal wing of Israeli society? Hebrew University, for
example, extends college courses and degrees to Palestinian prisoners
in Israeli prisons. It's particularly ironic, since Israeli
universities are some of the few places on earth where a Palestinian
woman can not only receive a university degree, but can do so while
wearing a niqab (veil) if she wishes; while at the same time in
Britain:
" A lawyer dressed in a niqab was told by an immigration judge that
she could not represent a client because, he said, he could not hear
her. A teacher wearing a niqab was dismissed from her school. A
student who was barred from wearing a niqab took her case to the
courts, and lost. In reaction, the British educational authorities are
proposing a ban on the niqab in schools altogether."

Several good points. It is group punishment, albeit less sever than the
Palestinians receive at the hands of the Israelis but still similar to
the sanctions placed against South Africa. Most of the world is against
what the Israelis are doing (as they are against what our government is
doing), even if their governments find economic advantage in maintaining
ties with Israel (more a nod, in my opinion to the economic consequences
imposed by the United States).

But, please. Read what I write. Don't beat up a straw man. There are
many good, decent Israelis. Even peace activists who don't care if their
neighbors are Palestinians or a Martians, for that matter. What they are
concerned about is how their neighbors treat them.

I just don't see the need for an Israel. An ethnically pure country?
Just has a bad sounding taste to it and Jews should be the first to
recognize that. Of course Zionism pre-date Nazism. After WWI, maybe an
ethnically pure state sounded reasonable. After WWII, I don't think so.
Zionism, in my opinion, is the problem. It is Zionism, and now
territorial aggrandizement, through ethnic cleansing that is the
problem. All property in Israel is owned by the state. Once a
Palestinian loses their land, they cannot get it back. Home destruction
by the state, and refusal to grant building permits are the weapons. How
about, I'm OK. Your OK. If you want to buy it, you pay for it?

The international community should be able to guarantee Jewish safety
(a legitimate concern, considering the past). At present it is just the
United States and Guam (and maybe the Marshall Islands) that guarantees
Israel's survival. But are they safe? Billions of dollars of American
foreign aid is squandered in Israel every year. What kind of country
would it be, if that money was spent on social needs instead for Moslems
and Jews?

Yes the niqab in Britain and the foulard in France are contentious
issues. Group pressure to conform or individual freedom? Personally, I
have no problem with either (niqab or foulard), if it isn't coercion.

I do not know what or who Master Leech means ? Eric Wollo,
Jalan_Jalan, etc are full of wonderful beautiful sound images.

Every hear "Group Between" or "Peter Michael Hamel" ? German guys lost

Had to go here http://www.schott-music.com/shop/ as CD no
longer available in USA and my LP's are just resting.

Between "And the waters opened" seem to be German Exports

Again, you contorted view of the Middle East and Israel.

No similarities there. Israel is not an apartheid state.

So what else is new? Israel is defending themselves against idiots who
blow themselves up in cafes and buses hoping to get some of those virgins
promised them. Don't forget that Israel is the only democracy in the
Middle East that supports the war against terrorism. I think that is good
enough reason to support them.

You would rather the Jews have no country of their own and wander the
earth being thrown into ghettos and rounded up and murdered. The Jews
were in Israel long before the Arabs arrived out of the Saudi desert in the
eighth century. They are entitled to a country just like England where the

State religion is Christian (I forget which denominaton), and on and on.

> An ethnically pure country?

There are several minority religious groups in Israel, including Moslems and
Christians. If you are going to point fingers about ethnic purity, look at
the
history of minority religions in the Arab countries. In some cases they were

accepted, but in many they were restricted in their activities and treated
poorly.
The Arabs would like the Middle East to be ethnically pure, all Moslem.
Hence,
the core of many of the problems of that region.

So you think anti-semitism is dead? You are not very informed on that
subject.

Bull shit. The government owns part of the land as does the British
government in their country. Most of the land in Israel is privately owned.

In the Arab countries, they don't even pay for the land they take
from the Jews (almost a million refugees). If you want to talk about
prejudice, why were the Jews( and in some cases Christians) treated as
second class citizens in many Arab countries?

The Moslems get plenty of money from their oil glutted neighbors.

I know it bothers you that Jews have their own state, and a strong one
as well. Well, get used to it. Try and look on both sides of these issues,

as the Palestinians have been guilty of many crimes against Israel. Their
is a large group (Hamas and others) who refuse to recognize the State of
Israel, and like you would like to push all the Jews into the Mediterranean.
Sound familiar to you?

I suggest you pay a visit to the region to see the situation for yourself.
If
you rely on the prejudicial news like the BBC, you will only get one side
of the picture. If you are not anti-semetic and are willing to look at the
realities from both sides, you may come to different opinions. I have lived
in the region for 5 years and have made frequent visits to countries around
Israel, like Eygpt, so I am speaking from my own experiences, not the bull
shit propaganda sites you seem to dig up on the internet.

I would like to see them trim their political banter to zero lines. I know I
am
contributing to this, but these guys will not give up and I can't stand by
and
see this garbage going on the gardening site.

Perhaps this collection of posts is a good example of what happens when people:

- do not think through the potential impact of what they say

- over react to each other's comments

- become entrenched in their positions

- need to show that they are "right"

Quickly it becomes difficult to forget what was said, and find a way forward enabling all to live in harmony and offer a neighbour a helping hand.

I hope you will see that you will not convince each other of your views, so why not return to gardening and offer each other the benefit of your wisdom in areas that will help each other.

If you want to make a difference in the Middle East then why not do something pro-active.

Perhaps with your very different views and connections, you could lead by example, agree to work together to sponsor a programme that had children from both communities working together on new gardens. (or a better idea)

Maybe in time, by working together on something they could all be proud of, the children and their families would nurture a bit more than flowers and vegetables for their communities.

Or, you could be rude about me too.

Sherwin, you're continuing it. I stay out of the politics now,
because I don't want to fight. So stop it.

Thank you. I owe it all to the lycopene I consume.

I think this was covered once before but just to be absolutely sure,
Lycopene from processed tomato products appears to be more bioavailable
than that from raw Tomatoes. Bioavailability of lycopene is believed to
be affected by:

Processing (cooking) undergone

Presence of dietary lipids

Heat-applied

The dosage and the presence of other carotenoids, such as ss-carotene

The bioavailability of lycopene is significantly higher when lycopene
was ingested along with ss-carotene than when ingested alone.
