View Full Version : Lighting with Energy Saving Fluorescents

I just bought a couple of those energy saving fluorescent bulbs for my home.
You know the ones that screw into regular incandescent sockets. They say a
13 watt bulb is equivalent to a 60W regular bulb.

A couple of questions arose in my mind.

1. Has anyone ever tried using these bulbs for aquarium lighting?

2. If one were to use one of these 13W bulbs which claim are equivalent to
60 W incandescent bulbs what value would you use to calculate the WPG?

13w. aquarium lighting is assumed to be flourescent.

My planted 20H has 2 of these...it has 1 15 w 18" daylight tube in the front,
and 2 13 w screw ins in the rear...growth seems really good...front and
back...the 13w screw ins definately put out more light EACH than the 15w
tube....

I have 2 in my 29 Gal Q tank and the 2 Amazon swords are very happy
with them. I also have 2 in a custom hood on my moderately planted
55 Gal that I use for early morning late evening after the big lights
shut off. It make a very nice transition light in that application.
The ones I have are Sylvania 15 watt 850 lumens. Wish I could
find one in a "Black light" configuration. Would be ideal IMHO for
night time.
