Help info on growing Bamboo

Hi

I just found this NG. and I got some bamboo 2 summers ago from a
friend who lives in Arkansaw, I live in Oklahoma.. the clump was
about 12 feet tall with
canes about 1.5 inches in diameter

it was planted in my yard and grew, but not very well by my
expectations, the new growth is only 2 to 3 feet tall and very small
in diameter. :-(

with the next growing season fast approaching what sort of feeding
schedule should I use, what, when and how much???

any help would be appreciated

Any kind of organic mulch is going to help , a few inches of grass
clippings will not only preserve soil moisture but decay and add
nutrients to the soil.
As for fertilizer a light application of turf fertilizer will do
nicely.
By the 3rd or 4th year it should be near as vigorous as the parent
stand.
Look for the american bamboo society webpages online as they have a
lot of good info.

Here is the line that I was told, The first year they sleep, the second
year they creep, the third year they leap!
They also like wood chips, grass, mulch, leaves, almost anything like
that. A little all porpoise lawn fertilizer won't hurt. Watch out for
Ammonia Nitrate though. I killed I nice 30 foot vivax with that stuff
being the mad scientist :)

Hi Tom:
My family was heavily into kiteing from about 91 until 96, competed at
Long Beach several times, got all types of kites, even one of the old
Lizard kite buggies with several traction kites. The Fighters are my
favorite though, love those tissue and bamboo originals even though the
synthetics are really good and much more durable. I just got a Tonkin
Bamboo plant that I figured I could use for kite spares and mini kites.
It is the kind of bamboo that is used for fly rods.

Hi L8R, Bri.

I had a two fold reason for the Bamboo 1: to be used like you said
for fighter kite spars, and 1: I also have a fish pond and would
like the beauty of a stand of bamboo. but as a previous reply ers
mentioned I have not waited long enough... this summer will be the
third summer so with a little luck and fertelizer maybe it will become
somthing to be proud of.

I have been to Longbeach several times and was there last year and the
year before I have a bunch of pictures on my web site, take a look if
you get time.

thanks to all who responded to my original posting, it has put my mind
to rest, so now we are just waiting for the snow to melt :-(
