Can you divide ivy?

I have a mature ivy (hedera helix) that I would like to divide.

I haven't found any sources that reccomend doing this -- most
suggest cuttings. Is there any reason that I shouldn't divide
this plant? Would it be better to cut it up and plant cuttings?
