When to harvest peas

I have grown (little Marvel) and on occasion (Early Alaska) peas for many
years and have always eaten them right-out-of-the-garden. Mainly because
they are delicious this way but also because I don't know at what point of
their maturity to harvest them for a dish. When the pods are still fully
green, the peas are sweet but slightly smaller than after the pods start to
discolor and the peas get slightly larger but not nearly as sweet. I'm
interested in finding out at what stage to pick them to fix cooked and
creamed as a dish. Thanks

The best I can offer you is the way I found out, as tastes vary........pick
at various stages and try to see what you like the best.......HW

I hardly ever plant shelling peas. I however plant the mangetout variety every
year. These are what are called snow peas, I think. Even then, I like the
mammoth melting over Oregon II

We had a 6 inch snowfall last week and I'm curious if I can plant those
(snow peas) now or if I need to wait for some additional snow. I have only
ever planted (shelling peas) and am new to those (snowpeas) you mentioned.

Snowpeas are one of the "as early as the ground can worked "plants. Since you
have grown regular English peas. you can treat the snow peas in the same manner
except that they have more vine than some varieties of English pea so plan on
some sort of trellis..
