View Full Version : SPARK PLUG or GASLINE PROBLEM ??? SEARS MOWER 6HP
Hi,
It was working very well, but after I replaced a new EZ START SPARK
PLUG REFRJ19LM bought at LOWES, and added 93# High Grade Gas, I can
not re-start it after I used it, in a word IT CAN NOT RE-START WHEN IT
IS HOT !!
But I can start it when the machine is COLD.
NEED HELP !!!!!!

If it was my old Cutlass, I'd say 'vapor lock'
If the gas hose is hard, brittle or cracked, it may need to have both
the gas hose and the rubber in the carb replaced by a small engine
shop (I just got a rebuild kit for a Craftsman chainsaw carb and it
leaks like a sieve so I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless
you know what you are doing :>)
Other than that, the obvious "Fill it up when it is cold" and "Go get
some gatorade when it is too hot to start"...

In the duh category, are you sure the new plug is correct for your engine?
Just a wild guess, but it could be that a hot plug is not maintaining the
correct spark gap distance or it may be in tolerance, but because high
octane fuel is (I think) less volitile than lower octane fuel it's not
providing a sufficient spark. Try with regular grade gasoline.

Make sure you still have spark at the hi tension terminal, a classic
symptom of a bad coil is no spark when hot.

You are wasting your money unless the mower is designed to run high octane
gas, which I'm sure it isn't. High octane is not better, nor cleaner, it
will not make your engine last longer or give you more power in any engine
not designed specifically for high-octane gas.

Did you set the gap on the plug to specs? Did you set the throttle on
the "hot start" position?
Don't waste money on high test gas. In fact, lawnmowers are
-designed- to run on 87 octane unleaded gasoline.

Trouble shoot doing one thing at a time.
1. replace the gasoline with regular If the mower now starts ait use to
problem solved.
If that doesn't work
2. Remove the easy start and replace it with your old sparkplug or a new
identical one.
If it still doesn't run, you have possibibly triggered a third problem. Which
could be one of several ranging from flooding (fuel mixture too rich) to a
defective coil.

Now that you mention it, my Honda tiller has a choke switch that should be
closed when starting cold and open when running or starting hot and there
have been times that it failed to start when in the wrong position. My
old, no name lawn mower (which I still haven't replaced with a push reel,
*waffle*) doesn't, unless the speed throttle has an effect (always starts
on 'fast' for me, though).
