Default Golden Penda advice please

I have a 2 1/2 year old golden penda (currently flowering)
The lower branches are spreading well. However, the main trunk (about
2 1/2 m tall) is a single trunk with no lateral branches. Do I chop it
back after flowering is finished or ignore it and let it do its own
thing? Any advice gratefully accepted
