Default [IBC] Metal Halides and Safety

I just got a metal halide light and there are warnings
all over the box saying it is dangerous to use near
people for more then a few minutes. At what distance
does it become dangerous and is there a way to
decrease the danger.

Thanks
Ben

Sure

Warning Do not operate where people will remain for
more then a few minutes unless adequate sheilding or
other safety precautions are used. This lamp can
cause serious skin burn and eye imflamation from short
wave ultraviolet radiation, if the outer envelope of
the lamp is broken or punctured and the arc tube
continues to operate.

With my metal halides and those of other friends
using them I have seen no
mention of danger.
Can you be more specific as to what the cautions
are?
