Installing Filter in a Koi Pond
Before finalizing the design of the koi pond, there are a few more practical considerations to take into account. As well as the pond itself, you will need space for the filter, water course and a quarantine installation, if you decide to have one.
As a general rule, allow for the filter being at least 30 percent of the surface area of the pond in size. This may mean modifying the design of your koi pond if the available space in your garden is at a premium. For example, a pond measuring 3x6m has a surface area of 18 meter squared and will therefore need a filter with a surface area of about 5.5 meter squared. However, for efficient filtration, the volume of water in the filter and the turnover rate are also important. |

The water must remain in contact with the nitrogen of bacteria in 15 to 20 minutes, if it is any longer or shorter period, the bacteria can not flourish. In order to maintain good water quality, it is imperative that the filter is a biological pond koi operates throughout the year.
