Default Overwintering plants don't do well?

OK, I finally gave in and pulled out some tomato plants that
had overwintered (to the extent that we have any "winter") from last
year. They didn't bear, got leggy and invasive, and were generally a
PITA. I should have learned, after all these years, not to push the
envelope. Nursery said overwintering plants generally don't do well.
Tried it few years ago, ISTR, with Bell Peppers, not much luck.

Is this a common experience?
