Default forcynthia? Forsythia!!!

That's Forsythia. You know, like the name of the guy (John Forsythe) who
does the voice of Charlie on "Charlie's Angels" and was Blake Carrington on
"Dynasty". The genus name should be pronounced "Forsythe - ee - ah" as it is
in England.

If your Forsythia aren't blooming, they must either be in very deep shade or
anemic. Usually they are indestructable weedy shrubs. Give the plants more
light and fertilize them.

If the forsythia are pruned heavily during the year, to keep them within their
contained space, you have been cutting off the buds or the places where the
flowers will bud.

I finally removed my forsythia because of ths problem. I had a little bit of
bloom and it was never going to get better.

You slightly shape forsythia after they bloom and let them grow.

Forsythia can be pruned hard immediately after they bloom. Any new growth
during the ensuing summer will bloom the following spring. To keep an old
plant in bounds, we cut about a third of the old stems to the grounds each
year.

Can I get some information about propagation...

Can you cut these and root?

Thanks,

Carla

The problem with forsythia is *keeping* it from propagating/rooting.
Every place a branch touches the ground, it'll grow roots. Trim some
branches and stick 'em in the ground, and they'll root. Put branches
in a container of water, and they'll root. Smile at them, and they'll
send out roots. :-)

I prune the **** out of mine! and it blooms like crazy. I never heard

Timing is everything here. If you prune them at the wrong time they
won't bloom next year. The buds develop during the late spring and
summer, so fall pruning removes them.

Default forcynthia? Forsythia!!!

we had really old forsythia trying to compete with overgrown brush.
I whacked everything to the ground.
I bought 5 different varieties of forsythia hardy to our zone 5 and planted them to
fill in the row on the 2nd terrace.
I put fences around them to prevent the rabbits from whacking them in the winter.
for the last several springs two of the new ones have bloomed profusely every spring.
I planted a PJM rhodo under a big picture window so that my mother looks thru the
purple flowers out onto the yellow forsythia down 2 terraces away.
I havent had time to whack out the old forsythia and take cuttings from the new to
move into the row.
forsythia blooms (I think) on newer wood, so really old wood needs to be removed
right after flowering to stimulate new wood growth.
