Encyclia Cindy
This plant has been the subject of some discussion here in Columbus, as
to the name. A friend obtained a number of these and graciously gifted me with one, and I was suspicious of the name. It was labelled 'Enc.Sidney'. I had heard of an Enc.Cindy and so I checked and could find no references to an Enc.Sidney, but did find several to Cindy and even saw a couple of pics on the web. I have had a similar problem with a few phals before, of asian origin, where the names were slightly altered in the translation, and some where l's and r's were switched. Even what turns out to be Laelia Tomiko was labelled Laelia anceps 'Tomilco'. I had a devil of a time with that one until Paul Storm showed a slide of the plant which turns out to be a hybrid of L.anceps and Schom.(now laelia) lyonsii, which was what I had suspected it to be from the way it looked. I suspect part of the problem is a language one and part of it is just bad transcribing, but it can be challenging ferreting out the correct name. Now that it has bloomed and matches one of the pics I see, I am certain it is in fact Enc.Cindy. |
