Default A 300 Million Year Old Fossil Forest In Illinois

Over at
http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/research/co...l-forest.shtml is
an article, with many images of fossil plants, explaining the occurrence and
deposition of an excellently preserved 300 million year-old
Pennsylvanian-age (Upper Carboniferous) fossil forest exposed deep within a
coal mine in eastern Illinois. Be sure to click on the images at the bottom
of the page to view the many fossil plants.

To view a chunk of valuable high-grade montan wax-bearing lignite (low grade
coal) from the Middle Eocene (roughly 48-45 million years old) Ione
Formation, western foothills of the Sierra Nevada, plus a photograph of
California's only active, operating commercial coal mine--it's located in
Amador County--jump on over to

Very interesting web site. Where is the Ione Basin from lets say
Bishop? I grew up in Orange County in the south but have been gone for
many years.
