The mystery of watering my patch???

Hi,

I want to start another veggie patch after moving into a new rental house,
but the BIG mystery to me about growing vegies is getting the watering
right!!!

In my last patch I installed a combination of sprayers and drippers on black
poly pipe running through the vegies. The drippers seemed to do the best
job - wasted less water; didn't water the weeds; didn't cause mildew on the
zuchinis; etc.

However, my concern is that every time I want to re-plant after harvesting,
I would have to re-plant at the same spacing as the drippers I have used
previously! This is obviously difficult if I want to rotate my crops or grow
something of a totally different size!

Considering this, should I just stick to sprayers and spray water over the
whole patch???

What watering methods do YOU use in your patch???

g'day dizne,

maybe you could have the dripper nozzles on the end of some of that
flexible small diamater hose they use in irrigation systems that way
you could then move the drippers to suit the plantings without moving
the main drip line.

I like a soaker hose - turned upside down. I just run it the length of the
row and turn it on with the pressure on VERY low. I put it on a timer and
let it soak in slowly.

I currently use Aquapore hoses on mine. These are made from old car
tyres, and fabricated so water will just Œsweat¹ through them. My beds
are about 4m long and a 15m hose, loosely coiled down each, covers
everything. Each time I replant I just pull out the hose onto the
ground next to the bed, do whatever I need to do, then lay it back on
top.

The hose is not very flexible. At first I thought I would run it
backwards and forwards down each row but I could not make it stay in
place. I tried staking it down, but found that it was easiest to just
not fight it. Lifting the hose out seems easier if it is in loops as
well.

It is quite expensive though. Next time I think I will try out a soaker
hose first before shelling out the dollars.

THe simplest way would be to use the smaller "spaghetti" tube running from
the main poly pipe lining, with the drippers attached to that. This is about
the thickness of a pencil, cheap, and flexible, and you cut it to lenghts
you want.
In fact if I did have a watering system in my garden, that is the way I'd do
it, as it's the only way I know due to a couple of watering systems at work
using this method, and a wholesale nursery near here does it, one dripper or
sprayer to each pot.
You can also get adjustable sprayers too.
Only downfall to it is you can get blowouts where they are plugged into the
main line, but usually this is due to high pressures, or holes made to big
for the plugs in the main line.
