Default Odd small holes in lawn

Are these "freshly dug" holes? What part of Austin are you in? Without
seeing a pic, I can't tell you for sue, but I know especially south of town
there are certain species of spiders - some of them quite large - that live
in ground tunnels. Have you tried shining a flashlight in the holes?
Really cool.....

For a several weeks now I've noticed small holes dug in my yard.
The holes are about an inch deep and across, and have gotten so prolific
that I was questioned if I had recently aerated my lawn.

Any ideas what might be causing these?

Thanks,
-Neal
