Default grackles in my post oak

ok...this is strange. must be because of all the rain
this year, but my large post oak above my house has
produced a ton of acorns. i've only lived here for 5 years
but i don't recall it ever producing this many, if any.

anyway, for the last few weeks, swarms of grackles
are up in the tree seemingly picking acorns...but they
are dropping a ton of them. i've tried to see if they're
eating them and accidentally dropping some, but frankly,
it's hard to tell. i see some of them "nibbling" on acorns,
and then they fly off before i see if they actually eat
the thing.

so what's up? are they eating them? trying to crack
them open? just helping the squirrels out by harvesting
them? it sounds like a hail-storm on my roof with all
the acorns falling...

thanks,
marty.
