Can I put wood based cat litter (minus the cat poo) in the compost bin? I
know cat poo is not good but is the rest ok?

It depends. IMO, if you're hot composting there's no reason at all not to
include the litter, poo, wee and all. The temeratures acheived in a hot
compost will kill any parasites viruses and pahogeni bacteria and the
quick process will stop scavengers raiding the compost for the poo (cats'
digestions are so poor compared with the dog family that dogs/foxes/
hyenas will eat cat/lion/cheetah poo because there is a lot of nutrient
still in it - horrible but true). I would certainly not put litter, with
or without the poo into a cold heap. If hot composting the litter will
count as 'brown' and should be mixed with plenty of 'green'.

Yes. No reason why not.

Even if you separate the shit from the rest of the cat litter, it will still be high in nitrogen, which is good for acceleration. The secret of a good compost heap is balance. A mixture of prunings, veg. peelings, cardboard, shredded paper, etc, should do the trick.

I have seen lots of people asking this question I myself tried many times to make good compost as it seems a really environmentaly friendly thing to do, I found a good site that tells you all you need to do is http:www.diycompost.com
They list all the do's and don'ts of composting and an explanation of the complete nitrogen cycle as well
