Default raised bed boxes

Once boxes made(3x 6-8 X 2feet ) I said paint inside and bottom edges of each board with bitumen paint/ paint for iron work to preverve timber as once filled you ca'nt get at it. He's concerned about contamination of soil, seeds or plants. Thoughts please
Many thanks in advance. Charlie2
