Demonising the hedgehog!
The SNH Nazi CONservationists who are perpetrating the extermination of the
Uist hedgehogs have demonised them by calling them aliens and saying they are responsible for the decline in waders, which the both RSPB and locals wish to exploit for tourism. Will this lead to the greedy Hebrideans killing hedgehogs on sight? These hedgehogs need some form of protection from both the Nazis and the those who benefit from the exploitation of waders. Hedgehogs in the wrong place are pests, and the Outer Hebrides is the wrong place. Which is why the Hedgehog Welfare Charities are trying to remove them. It is SNH's insistence on killing the hedgehogs they capture, rather than handing them over for relocation, which is the root of the problem. |

Organisations like St Tiggywinkles and the BHPT are not in the business of deliberate or reckless torture of hedgehogs, and have many years practical experience in the rehabilitation and release of hedgehogs. If they feel the translocation project is feasible, and their membership and the public is prepared to fund it, I see no good reason why SNH should deny them the opportunity. The Uist Wader Group's recommendation was that there should have been a pilot 'official' translocation scheme this year, to test survival of translocated specimens, but, for some unknown reason, SNH decided to avoid testing their pessimistic theories, and to press on with killing all the animals they captured. |

I imagine a hedgehog down the waders would indeed be rather uncomfortable, but it seems like such an unlikely accident that I think it's a bit unfair to blame the hedgehog for discouraging tourists from wearing them. Hello Andy. The promble is that towrists are being forced to wear waders because they keep discovering hodgehegs wearing sandals. Everyone knows that hodgehegs wearing sandals are bad news, and Sn!pey likes them down him about as much as - well - we won't go into that innit.
