Help with cauliflower killers please
What is eating my cauliflower plants, and more importantly how can I
stop it? I have Summer cauliflowers and summer cabbages planted together under netting. The cabbages are untouched but the caulis have been devastated. The hearts of the plants have been eaten and some of the leaves chewed off at the stalk and are lying on the ground. Any ideas on the perpetrator, or how to find out what it is would be appreciated. I think they are too far gone to save, but I don't want my Winter caulis to go the same way. TIA John |

Help with cauliflower killers please
Good morning John,
I would check for rabbits or some other animals getting into your netting, although it has been my experience that rabbits will eat the entire plant to the ground. Grass hoppers eat on some parts of the plants and leave the rest alone, but not just the caulis. I would put up a temporary fence for the animals (unless you have some that climb fences) and a mild spray for the bugs. I am in the U.S. and sometimes I will get a "dust" to sprinkle on my plants, and sometimes a milder spray that does the job. I have had slugs eat the berries off my strawberries, but I have never seen them on cauliflowers. Good luck. Dwayne "Broadback" wrote in message ... |

TIA John Big slugs or snails can be pretty devastating and leave bits of leaves around but that sounds more like Voles, I don't see that type of damage until into the winter when they can fell winter caulis like beavers fell trees. Rat bait placed so non-target animals can't get it or trapping, or a suitably cooperative cat seems to be indicated here. Rod Weed my address to reply http://website.lineone.net/~rodcraddock/index.html Thanks for the replies, it is not rabbits as I have problems with them but my veg. garden is well fenced off. If it was slugs I would have expected them to attack the cabbages as well. also there are leaves lying on the ground where the stalks have been eaten through, I suspect for easy access to the soft juicy centres. So voles or mice seem perhaps the most likely, I have just planted a few more cabbage in the bed, and on doing so there seems to be tunnels. Any other ideas most welcome. |

That's a strange one, normally it's pigeons but you have yours netted so they can't be the problem. Also doesn't sound like slugs or Flea Beetle so the only thing I can think of is rabbits or mice. -- Regards Bob Some photos of my plants at..... |
