Default Fruit Tree

Thinking of getting either a plum or damson tree for a corner
of the garden. They have some in our local garden centre in
smallish pots, presumably ready for planting (although there is
no signs of fruit on them!).

Looking at nurseries on-line they offer the trees for late
November delivery (when dormant was the comment on one).

Whist I would like to support my local GC, what is the most
sensible option?

a) Buy a pot and plant out now
b) Buy a pot and keep until dormant, then plant out
c) Get from dedicated tree nursery

MY heart says a dedicated fruit tree nursery but I have a cautionary
tale there. Bought 4 cherry trees, wanted and asked for them all on
Gisella 5 rootstock which is the most dwarfing.

Bought one from Brogdale which is like Jacks beanstalk and plainly not
on Gisella 5, it will have to come out.
Bought one from another fruit tree specialist nursery in Hampshire,
seems to be diseased, canker I think.
Bought two from RHS Wisley, perfect.
