I've managed to grow some aji chilli plants from seed. I've now potted-on the
15cm-high plants, and one of the pots contains 2 plants, 5cm apart.

Should I scarce the smaller of the plants, attempt to separate and re-pot, or
let nature take its course?

It rather depends on how many seedlings you've got and how many you
want. If you've got plenty, I'd gently separate the two in the one pot
and repot them separately. If they both die, you've still got plenty
more. If you've only got one or two seedlings, then you have to decide
whether to risk losing one or both by repotting them, or let nature
take its course, or take a chance and go for repotting.

If it were me, I'd go for repotting the pair, and take the risk
regardless of how many other seedlings you have. It rather depends on
how good you think you are at bringing them on.

Thanks for the tips - echo pretty much exactly what a local gardener told me.
I've had a go at separating them. So far (after one day) so good, but there
was a sickening ripping of roots sound as I gently pulled them apart. I've one
other plant on the go.
