I'm no expert but I think they are scale insects; there are a dozen or so
varieties. Google came up with lots of info, but that's up to you to wade
through. To summarise my findings briefly though, scrape 'em off with
a toothbrush ( you may need to do this several times ), or use a systemic
insecticide that gets taken up by the plant ( contact insecticides are
ineffective with this bug ). Provado was mentioned as an insecticide.
