I haven't read any of his books, Joan is the gardener, but she does show
me 'snippets' here and there and explains 'That is what I want to do'
and if it involves the hardware, out comes the spade, spirit level, etc.
Not just his books, but what seems like 100's of gardening books, which
leads me to ask the question, 'Why do gardeners have so many books?'

Gardening is such a huge topic of interest that there's always something
new, or at least a variety of ways to do things.. there isn't always a
'right' answer..
Books offer us a chance to 'meet' other styles and views of gardening
that we might otherwise miss. esp when written by great characters..
Christopher Llyoyd springs to mind at once as does Hugh Johnson.

I have just read that reply out to Joan who was taking a breather from
OU Studies.

"Hugh Johnson? Oh that's a new name to me. I would like to know more
about him"

One of his books was on my University Horticultural reading list for my
course.. Recommended by Peter Wiseman (I think) one of my lecturers at
university (Central Lancs) . The actual title on the list was Out of
Print but I perservered and managed to get a revised edition called Hugh
Jonson's Gardening Companion. I like it as its a mixture of garden
science, design theory and the authors personal style.

It was originally released as 'The Principples of Gardening' which
received exceptional reviews.

will get you the information on this book. I smushified the long link
for ease of posting! Suggest you try blackwells or Swotbooks first.

Is not the cheapest book I ever bought but I think it is worth the
money. NOT a 'coffee table' book.

( you know the kind, lots of piccies and little content the best use
would be putting 4 short bits of wood under them and resting your hot
beverage on the cover!-)
