Default Pricing Fish!

(Victor M. Martinez) wrote in message ...
Yeah, but every single rainbow fish I've seen at Petsmart has really mild
coloration. I guess they get them from breeders that don't have really good
stock. It's best to get rainbows either from reputable breeders or wild-caught.

I haven't seen rainbow fish at Petsmart. (And I've been looking
regularly!) I'm curious whether you (or anyone else) has purchased one
of these colorless fish and taken it home, and whether its color then
improved.

The reason I ask is that I've reluctantly purchased other poorly
colored fish at Petsmart, and had them improve tremendously at home.
The most recent example was a rosy barb that was almost gray. His
color steadily improved until, two weeks after purchase, he was a
beautiful deep iridescent red.

I have a theory that the color of Petsmart fish may have more to do
with stress, nutrition, etc. than with genetics. But I don't have
enough examples to say that with any confidence.

Incidentally, I found Boesemani rainbows at Petland, where they were
$12 for 2-inch fish. It seemed a little high to me, but then they're
the first store I've found around here (SW Chicago suburbs) that
carried them at all.
