Algae likes carbon as well, they prefer CO2 as well.

Tom,
Thats why I use Excel, because Of the many many tanks I have that are
not quite big enough for a C02 system. I read about the hassle and cost
of the carbo block system, and I opted for the Excel.
I use excel for the organtic carbon source and enjoyed the nice side
effect of no algae.
