Default [IBC] Easy species for indoor/outdoor bonsai culture?

Hi there,

What type of species would work indoor/outdoor in South

Alabama? I am
a beginner. Buy pre-bonsai or larger specimen? Thank you.

Not sure quite what you are asking. If you are looking for a
tree that will do well inside AND outside there are several
options. Chinese elm, various ficus species, or even the dreaded
serissa would work.

If you are asking what are the best exclusively outdoor trees and
then the best exclusively indoor trees, the answer is a bit
different.

But Chinese elm (again) will be on both lists. Ficus is a good
exclusively indoor tree. The Chinese juniper or the Juniperus
procumbans both will do for beginners as an outside tree. Ilex
vomitoria (yaupon holly) also is a good starter tree.

Pre-bonsai or a nursery plant will give you the greatest sense of
accomplishment once you have converted them to a bonsai. To me,
at least, buying a bonsai that someone else made and then just
feeding and watering it is something like petting a goldfish.
