I suppose a family might produce half a gallon of HLA a day.
Is that too much for a one metre cube compost heap?

HLA is often recommended, but I've never seen advice about quantity.
What is too little - and what is too much?

If you leave a 10litre bucket bythe compost heap, then when you get taken short, just pee into the bucket '[ which will be full of rainwater] then when the heap is a bit of the dry side, just pour it in. You're adding nitrates in dilute form plus bacteria. No great science it will work.

Easier if you construct the heap correctly in the first place with a good mix of ingredients and it should fire off nicely. Give it a turn every few weeks when you think the heap has cooled.
