Default Which type should I start with

Peter,

There are around 30,000 species, 200,000 registered hybrids, and
countless unregistered ones, so there is bound to be SOMETHING that will
fit your desires.

However, growing orchids is nothing like growing other plants. *They are
a very highly evolved plant family, and each has its cultural niche, so
unless your growing conditions and watering habits match a particular
plant's needs, you will have difficulties. *Conversely, find a good
match, and they can be like weeds!

I've never grown orchids before but would like to grow ones that have
vivid rich colours. I know there are several types but which type
should I start with as a beginner? Thanks

Peter,
don't be afraid to try your hand at growing orchids just because there
are thousands of different species and hybrids from all over the
world. Go to you local nursery or flower shop and ask then what types
would do well in your home- they'll be happy to advise you.
Phalaenopsis are one of the most common types and they come in many
different color combinations although most florist probably have the
typical colors- violet, white, and maybe some yellows with some other
colors mixed in. If you go online to one of the websites such as
Orchidmall.com you'll find many other resources to enlighten you on
this fascinating hobby. Good luck !
