You're right, this model has the filler tube coming out the back under
the seat. The tube itself is a weird shape, as it has two really
sharp bends before it goes into the transmission, so it's not actually
straight down. It appears to go into the transmission about at the
midpoint between the top and bottom of the transmission housing
itself. But now that you mentioned the oil level could be up the tube
a ways, that makes sense now. I just wasn't sure how far up the tube
it was supposed to be. I think I'll call the JD dealer to double
check the part # on it. Thanks a lot!

You could also drain the oil completly, then fill it according to the
specs. Then compare that level to the dipstick reading.

Yeah I thought of that. Unfortunately I ended up overfilling the
thing, using the dipstick they gave me because it was too short. I
called them back and talked to somebody else who was finally able to
find the correct one. The one they originally gave me is a straight
blade-type dipstick, used for transmissions without the PTO coming out
the back. Mine has the PTO and the tube has a curve that comes out
over to the side. Oddly enough, the dipstick looked just like what I
had originally. It looks just like a piece of throttle cable attached
to a cap, with about 3/4 of an inch of black paint on the end to mark
the level. Strange but it works. Thanks again for the feedback.
