I have Spear & Jackson petrol model and cord is fraying so I thought
I'd better replace it before it goes !
Is it straightforward or had I better take it in to the repair shop

Thanks for any help

Be carefull, there are no spare parts available for Spear & Jackson
petrol products to the best of my knowledge (imported from china and
"stickered" with a familier sounding name.... same as JCB garden
products, Power Devil, etc etc etc!)

When you remove the Recoil Starter Mechanism from the engine on the
underside you will see the plastic Recoil Pulley. Behind this Pulley is
the Recoil Spring which is similar to tensioned clock spring. Only
remove the pulley if you are confident you have removed all of the
tension from the spring but in some cases you can re-thread a new cord
on to the pulley "insitu" without having to actually remove the pulley.
Removal of the pulley while there is still tension it may result in
injury.... if your unsure, try and find a specialist who is willing to
work on Spear & Jackson product as most will not.

Thanks for advice - shame about pull cord going as this machine is not
a bad bit of kit for the price - it's done well and still a bit more
life in it yet ......
Just a thought ..... as the cord is fraying 10cm from cord handle if I
cut it and reconnect pull handle would this cause problems ?
Recoil spring permantly under increased tension etc.
