Suit notification to protect green sturgeon
From The Oregonian, Feb. 21, 2003, p B10 (Metro)
Suit notice aims to protect green sturgeon Conservation groups have notified the federal government of their intent to file a lawsuit to protect the green sturgeon, a relic of the dinosaur age that is native to the West Coast. The Environmental Protection Information Center, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Oregon Natural Resources Council have sent a 60-day notice of intent to initiate legal action to the Fisheries Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The notice follows the government's decision last month against listing the North American green sturgeon as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The government's finding contradicts scientific assessments. Wendell Wood of the Oregon Natural Resoruces Council said Thursday. Conservationists say only three river systems are known to support the green sturgeon today. They are the Klamath-Trinity, Sacramento and Rogue rivers. Posted by Daniel B.
