Forest company gets eviction notice
WebPosted Jul 28 2003 10:23 AM PDT

TOFINO, B.C. - The Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation on the west coast of Vancouver
Island has issued an eviction notice to forestry giant Interfor.

The band wants the company to stop logging in its traditional territory in the
Clayoquot Sound area.

Simon Tom is a councillor with the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation.

"Basically what happened was government and the licensee disregarded our
cultural values and called into question surveys that were done by our own
people."

The eviction notice comes just weeks before the celebration marking the tenth
anniversary of the mass Clayoquot protests arrests that drew worldwide
attention to the effort to save old growth forests in B.C.

International Day of Action for Clayoquot Sound
Wednesday, August 13th, 2003

Clayoquot Sound was best described by the Clayoquot Sound Scientific Panel as
the most spectacular expression of North America's ancient temperate rainforest
and is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is the largest tract
of ancient forest remaining on Vancouver Island, an island that is 75% logged.

In 1993, 12,000 people came to Clayoquot Sound to protest the industrial
logging of its rare ancient forests. With 856 people arrested it was the
largest act of peaceful civil disobedience in Canadian history. The blockades
spawned a movement of environmental activism that continues today and Clayoquot
remains an icon and source of inspiration for the environmental movement.

Today, ten years after the world demanded an end to the destruction of
Clayoquot Sound's ancient forests large-scale industrial logging continues.
Forestry giant, International Forest Products (Interfor), still logs ancient
old-growth timber and intends to log in some of the last pristine valleys of
Clayoquot Sound. Unfortunately, most people are under the impression that
Clayoquot Sound is saved due to the green washing efforts of government and
industry and because Clayoquot Sound has been designated a UN Biosphere
Reserve. With the threat of logging in Clayoquot's pristine valleys it is more
important than ever that people are aware of what is happening.

This summer is the ten-year anniversary of the 1993 blockades and Clayoquot
Sound needs your help. Wednesday, August 13th is an International Day of Action
for Clayoquot Sound. We are asking organizations, around the globe, to help put
the pressure on Interfor. You can participate in many ways, including banner
hangings, phone & fax jams, creative activism, stickers and pamphlets, and
peaceful actions at Canadian embassies, Interfor customers, high-traffic
locations, etc.

Let Interfor know what you think of their activities in Clayoquot Sound. Sign
the prepared letters, or write your own and send them to Interfor's head office
in Vancouver. Let Interfor customers in your area know about Interfor's
destructive practices and that you will not shop at their store until they stop
carrying Interfor products
