Default English Boxes

Hi All,
I'm new to gardening and basically have no idea on a lot of things
involving it. My wife just laid down some redchip along the front of
the house as it looked crappy. With the new chip it really brings out
a cleaner nicer edging around the house. Question is can I lay down
english boxes or any plants on chip and if so how much soil do I need
to lay around? Stupid question but I got no idea. Currently we have
native plants which look nice but wouldn't mind cleaning up.
Cheers,
Kat.
