Hi All

I planted some nastursium seedlings about five weeks ago and while they are
growing and producing lovely leaves, there is not much happening in the
flower department. Any idea what I could do to produce more flowers?

I live in Melbourne

Many thanks

Michelle

Did you plant them in nice, rich, well cultivated soil with a fine tilth, and
give them fertiliser?

That's why. They flower better in harsh conditions.

Thanks for your help. In one spot the soil is quite rich - and I did add
fertiliser when I first prepared the bed for vegies. The other spot is
poorer but maybe it still is too "good" for the nastursiums. Oh well ... at
least the leaves are pretty! By the way, are the leaves edible or only the
flowers?

Also they like drier conditions to flower so if you plant them in a poor
soil don't water them as much as the rest of the garden if you want flowers.

The leaves on the nasturtiums are very nice and my Mum loved
them on fresh bread as they have a nice mustard taste to
them

Leaves are edible. The small tender ones are best. And the seed pods
can be pickled to make fake capers, so I believe. When your plants
eventually do flower, allow some to go to seed, then you'll never have
to buy seedlings again!

I like the way rain drops turn into quicksilver on their leaves.
