Tree for West facing garden
Hello,
I'm looking for small trees to plant in the front of my Melbourne garden. The bed is facing the West and gets over 12 hrs of sun. I'd like to get maple (looking) trees. I do enjoy seeing autumn colors you see. Can I get a few recommendations please? Cheers! |

Japanese Maple Anything weeping is good, you'll be able to pick the height you want when you buy it ( they don't grow much taller, just wider ) weeping Cherry - good autumn colour, flowers in spring. Lots of varieties too. Weeping Mulberry - I didn't get much autumn colour, but the tree looks great and the fruit is fantastic. Weeping Birch seem to grow well in SE Melbourne. Celtic Cascade ( see Chris & Marie's Plant farm at www.hellohello.com.au ) a little colour, very dense, thick weeper. Pretty well indestructable. Not very maple like though. Mop Top ( also from Chris & Marie's Plant farm ). There's two types : Mop Top ( the normal one ) - this gets a huge, dense head very quickly and looks magnificent. I've had problems getting one established in an exposed location. Extreme heat & very hot, gusty wind seems to knock them around. I've got two others ( one in a pot ) both in sheltered positions, and they are perfect - no maintenance for 1-2 years, min. water, absolutely thriving. Designer Mop Top - similar to the regular one, but with larger leaves and a much smaller root pattern. Good for planting near paving, concrete etc. I've had one of these in a fairly exposed position since about August, and it is doing really well. It is also low maintenance and doesn't seem to need much water. There's a few ideas at least. Have a look at the hellohello website. Even if you're not in the area, it gives some great ideas - there's a large range and good prices. I'm not associated with the nursery, although they have a lot of my money... They do have good service and a good range, plus really good prices. As we were establishing a new garden, we spent a fair amount of time and money there. I've also noticed that a lot of nurseries in our area have dropped their prices over the last couple of year to compete, so I like to encourage the low prices by spreading the word... Good Luck !
