Prune roses
 

Is it too late to prune roses here in Melbourne?

My friend just moved into her new house and the roses were not pruned during
Winter- if fact looks like they weren't pruned since 2004.

Some of them are already flowering and have produced a lot of red shoots and
new baby canes.

I am still pruning them in Perth. Lots are shooting but I tend to prune
hard. I still think pruning in early august is best. I know someone who
prunes in September and they reckon this stop aphids from attacking the
bushes.

But when all is said and done a nice rose on a good rootstock will recover
at any time of the year.

Thanks Richard. The roses are westward facing and get a lot of sun.

I went ahead and pruned them. I am still not sure whether I've done the
right thing. I guess I'll find out in January - Feb when the Summer really
warms things up here.

Not too sure abt Perth, but in Melbourne, people here usually prune their
roses in June and July.

g'day stan,

doubt you have made any mistakes mate, it is still technically winter,
even though the air temps may be higher the ground temps may be static
at winter temp's.

the rose doesn't need kid glove treatment, it is just another exotic
plant that may need some prunning at times to keep it tidy.

as you can see i'm no super dooper rose lover, much the same with all
exotics realy. but we just bought a new home and ripped out the ill
concieved gardens for want of a better word. they had roses in them so
in preperation for digging them up and dumping them i hacked them
sorry heavily pruned them down to about 4"s above the graft (well it
looked like a graft).

then 2 weeks later without giving the garden any water (why would i
waste the stuff?) i then pretty much roughly dug up the rose plants
all but bare rooting them, and had decided i'd put them into pots! did
so and now a few weeks alter they have the lushest foliage i have ever
seen and all have put on full bloom.

no pussyfooting around here hey? lol lol

guess i'll be invited to join the rose lovers guild after this hey
chuckle lol?

anyone up this way want to offer me a few bucks they are theirs hey??

I've heard some experts say it's best to plant them after the frosts are
over. Still plenty of time.
