Have a look here.
Some good hints on why tomatoes have problems.
finally keyed in the search on Google for tomatoes and copper wire.

????? I must admit that I didn't find this site to be of any
relevance to me at all. Nearly every post spoke of "blight" and I've
nver had anything like that on my tomatoes.

Hmm, most problems I've experienced this year seem to have to do with
shrivelled up drying leaves, blight may be one way of describing it. I
got a few varieties of tomatoes and the worst affected ones were the
Black Russian variety. The favourite of blackbirds etc..
But as some have tried and experimented with copper wire it seems that
that's probably another item that should be laid to rest. I reckon
copper sulphate on leaves sprayed liberally should stop most of these
problems. The Bordeaux mixture?
Some dusts probably work if applied after rains etc..
