g'day friends,

ok bouyed with our success last year, we did the instant spud patch
again, this time with a kilo' each of 'sebago' & 'pontiac' spuds.
nowhere special just in the middle of the front yard.

got the agrlic in a few days after the winter equinox, got more to
plant yet and one has already sprouted.

oubout autumn equinox which weve just had, the winter (2007) one is
still a few months away.

there is no equinox in winter - it's a solstice :-)

summer & winter solstices = longest day + shortest night/shortest day +
longest night
autumn & spring equinoxes = day & night of equal length at these times.

actually, i suspect there might be a bit more to it than that (path of the
sun & all that), but there's the basics. len must have been talking about
the autumn equinox, because you wouldn't plant garlic during the winter
solstice (afaik!!!!) because it would be too late. unless perhaps you live
in the tropics.(?)

garlic is naturalised at our place (which is quite cool when you think about
it) & it started coming up about a week ago, but if memory serves me right,
there is a LOT more to come up yet. the damn stuff is everywhere. i think it
is getting too cold for my taties now. i have some in feed bags, but i've
just moved them into the greenhouse due to lack of progress outdoors. i will
enjoy len's taties as a consolation prize g

that is the autumn/winter equinox (thought it occurs in our official
autumn) the next period is the winter solstice (june 22nd) the
shortest day.

up here march into april (no later) a fairly exacting time if you want
garlic to grow and mature properly before the spring rains come and
rot it in the ground. same with spuds if it gets too hot they want to
go to seed and not produce good tubers, in mild winters our spud
returns always lower.

This is the sorta stuff they teach at kindergarten here.
If the Equinox is followed by good rains the nitpickers will be out in
force. Picking nits of course. They grow extra well till we plant
garlic in Melbourne, which is about the time the nit pickers, not
being able to stand the smell, disapear.
So the difference between Q'land and Melbourne for planting is we
should plant garlic at the winter solstice...
Love the difference in temperature, but the Q'landers ham it up. We
had this lost Q'land bloke come into my electrical shop once to buy a
heater, and it was mid summer here....
We both had a good laugh....

yes jim,

ok i could/should have said autumn equinox maybe? but in reality we
have 2 growing seasons here in aus' and that is the summer season and
winter season and that's it, some have a longer winter and so nature
can balance the books others have a longer summer.

so i guess i won't even allude to the summer equinox then hey chuckle?

Once when living in Darwin we took a summer holiday down south. Pitched the
tent in the brother's back yard at Kilmore. Went to the races & SWMBO
reckoned she had never been sooooo cold in her life. I did not think it was
cold but I used to live there????? Getting a little tired of these long hot
Qld summers, but it just beats freezing.

Jeeze Len! Get it right! In Brisbane and the sub tropics and tropics you
might have 2 growing seasons but that doesn't apply to all of Aus or even
most of it!
