Default what are these?!

found a clump (literally) of grubs/caterpillars in the topmost topsoil
today, just under the mulch: about 2cm long & 3mm diameter, blackish, and
with a reddish head. after i uncovered them they all thrashed & wiggled
about, like spitfires. eww, it was a bit disgusting :-)

was going to give them to the chickens, thinking they are little cockchafers
or something like that, but perhaps they are the young of good bugs?

any ideas?
kylie (who secretly doubts they are the young of anything good)
