How much beer does it take to drown slugs?
 

You cant beat snail pellets, but if you really want to get them with
beer buy your own. Its terrible you should have to steal beer and give
it to undeserving snails.

Hubby's not all that happy about me swiping the stubby out from under his
chin as soon as it reaches the critical angle. I've had a stubby with maybe
1/2 inch beer lying under an old cabbage leaf for days and, though there
seems to be some sort of blobs in the bottom, there's still many big fat
very much alive slugs in my garden!
Am I skimping on the beer?
BTW ... slaters don't seem at all interested in it.

Re snails drinking Boags, yeah they might, but I refuse to drink the
lower alcohol Vic Bitter they try to pass of as VB. It is renamed
Carlton Draught. It will be turning up at "Not Quite Right" soon enough,
with all the other stuff thats out of date.
They said the taste would be the same, but didn't say the same as what!

Slugs tend to eat decaying matter so they aren't a problem.

g'day carmel,

the stubby top may be too small for the big juicy fellas to get to the
beer, use a more . open container so they can all get in together some
people just use a saucer, thaose disposable drink cups do well.

Years ago, when I had a house with vege patch, I used to push the round take away containters into the ground, up to the brim then pour in about an inch of beer. That got the snails, but I've never had slugs to deal with.

Yes. If you only have one stubbie you need more and pour the stuff into a
saucer so the smell can travel to them and they can all get some. And top
up after rain or watering. Or try using vegemite and water int he saucer or
derris dust and cornflakes dampened with a bit of beer or water.

Some one came up with a mix of dry cement and something else as a pest
controller. Any ideas?

are you really in u.k. or is that just a trick? :-)

anyway, if you're in australia like the rest of us here g, use "aware" or
"planet ark" washing powder & you won't have any problems with it at all.
most detergents these days are low or no-phosphorus anyway, but "aware"
(etc) is particularly benign.

if you're not in aust, there is most likely these days a low-chemical powder
which is equivalent to the above.

shower water isn't ever a problem - unless you're using massive quantities
of it, soap etc makes no real difference to the water.

i use grey water a lot on the yard, & never had any problems at all. (i do
like to use fresh water sometimes, though - i think it might be a bit rough
on the plants eventually if they never ever got anything but grey water -
ours goes through the shower & then through the machine, sometimes multiple
times, so sometimes it can be a bit strong).

Do you need a lawn for small children to play on? You could save much
water, expense and work by not having a lawn. There are alternatives.

Do you think that establishing a large garden without lawn is cheap? I
wouldn't. Despite all other issues like drought, etc I would have thought
that lawn would be reasonably cheap to setup, especially if you need to do a
large block.
We have planned only one patch of lawn and it's in the backyard. The grey
water from the laundry seems to keep it going well. The front will be garden
beds with low water use plants, path and driveway. Not cheap to establish.
The backyard is almost complete though.
