Pest/bug in hedge plants

Can anybody identify a thing which has taken up residence in my
recently plannted hedge of Acmena Smithii minor (I think that is right
its a Lily Pily)

Near the junction of a stem is a a white fluffy cobweb type of thing.
Not really like a cobweb but not like fungus either.

On close inspection it seems to contain a lot of small white dots
slightly less than a mm long so I could be the eggs of something.

Any ideas? and what can I do to get rid of it permanently (or don't I
need to?)

Sounds like mealy bug. Google for some pictures and see if that is it.

i second it sounds like mealy bug. the o.p. can smear a bit - if there is
purple there under the fluff, it's mealy bug for sure.

sigh. let me try that again.

i second that it sounds like mealy bug, OR woolly aphid. if the o.p. can
smear a bit & there's purple, it's _woolly aphid_ for sure. (i'm not sure
what colour you get if you smear mealy bug!)

mealy bug looks more bug-like on close inspection (they are bigger). woolly
aphid tends to just look like dots or clumps of bizarre fluff, until you've
seen them once & recognise them. afaik, treatment is the same anyway - white
oil.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have some white oil left from a
previous problem so I will try that.

Thanks
