Gooday all
Be aware there are some in this gardening area who are looking to attack
your computers by giving false links and phishing sites.

They will gain your confidence and take over your computer by various means.

It pays to stay clear of these persons.

Dont click on any links and make sure your anti spyware and anti virus
programs are up to date.
And last of all, they can impersonate others as well...
They have done so to me lately..
Regards and all. Happy gardening...

How do we know that you are not impersonating yourself?

Come to that, how do we know you are not someone with a vested
interest ? Perhaps you are trying to discredit everyone else just to
make more room for yourself.

Seriously though, you should all make sure your security is up to date,
and if any website suggests you disable your security, DON'T !!!
Allways have your anti-virus, firewall, adblocker, and anything else you
can think of.
Personally, I never allow cookies under any circumstances, because they
can also contain spyware. Also, as I said before, best to encrypt your hard drive, just to be doubly sure.

You could also try wrapping your head in cooking foil and keeping your
left foot in a bucket of whipped cream, if you are really that paranoid.

I do hope that by your comments you were not trying to imply that the site recommended by C Fiske was in any way suspect.

That site is ran by my son, Tom, and is bona fide. I would resent any suggestion otherwise.

Provided that you have adequate security protection, and if not shame on you, you can safely inspect the software he is kindly
offering. If there were any problems your security would flag a warning.

I know some outdated systems are very vulnerable, and would suggest you try Linux as an alternative OS.

By the way, most ISPs record all your e-mail addresses, all the
sites you visit, and any info you provide them upon sign-up,
this they sell on for around 24p sterling each. Multiply this by
all their customers and you will see they make a fat profit. Mind you, mobile phone companies do this as well.

Bearing this in mind, I suggest you aquaint yourself with all the facts before you make slanderous remarks.

Sadly, your son's actions in promoting his site are typical of spammers
and scammers, as is your supporting umbrage.

Lol, thanks for clarifying that your "son" is a scammer.

And why don't you and your son both drop dead.

Your son's post was totally OT on this ng and if your son chooses to post
spam here then I'm very supportive of anyone who chooses to slander him.
And IF you think that Jon did that, then you have comprehension problems as
he did no such thing.

And also there is a new Trojan going around that is attached to a very
poorly written notice about how "you've been doing illegal downloads on the
internet and your ISP is going to disconnect you. See your record of
illegal activities in the attachment". And my ISP hasn't yet filtered such
stuff out and I'm not even sure if the lalest download of my security
software can pick it up yet.

Having had a chat to my son and explained the kind of response his kindness prompted, he has decided that the
simplest solution is to deny access to any request from your
country. That way you won't have to live in fear that the bogey man is gonna get you. It's just a shame that you choose to spoil it for everyone else.

No its been documented that nutty geeks and people who steal passwords
etc are targeting these areas.
It pays to not use your real email address and the people who just gave
me the "works" just now
have the vested interest.
You can find all about it using google and wikipedia.

under scamming phishing passwords key loggers

safe, but it is the kind of thing they do.

Anti-virus firm Sophos reports that hackers have posted messages on some
30,000 Internet message boards and usenet newsgroups declaring that
photographs of the hanging suicide of Osama bin Laden could be found on
certain Web sites. The links lead users to a Trojan horse.

Virus writers have come up with another social-engineering tactic to
dupe computer users into clicking onto an infected Web site.

According to the anti-virus firm Sophos, hackers have posted messages on
some 30,000 Internet message boards and usenet newsgroups declaring that
photographs of the hanging suicide of Osama bin Laden could be found on
certain Web sites.

"This is a Trojan horse, so it will not replicate as quickly as a virus
does," Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, tells
NewsFactor. Nor is it a new Trojan horse, he continues. "It has been
around for months. What is new is the posting of messages and use of bin
Laden as a ploy to get people to click on the Web site."

Its not us spoiling it, its the scammers who do so.
Unfortunately, its hard to tell the difference at times.
The company I work for does not allow any access on the internet at all.
Makes every one secure, and you dont have to be paranoid to want to be
safe...

You would open and read such a topic/subject?

Oh.. you have. Cos you have.

[shakes head in awe]

Don't be stupid. Of course I haven't opened the attachment. The first
thing I did when I read the illiterate email I received was to go onto the
Web and do a hunt for Trojans. It's new and all warnings I could find on
the Net seem to be dated from 15 September. See if your virus sofware will
pick it up:

Right, Let me explain this once, and then we can all get back to gardening issues.

A lady that my son helped with her computer problems thought it would be nice to share info on a software prog, so she posted it.
And that's it, that's all there is.
Yes, he belongs to a very small group of computer programming enthusiasts who like to swap the software they have written.
He does not head some giant international scam to steal all your priceless photographic art.
We have done nothing to warrant such a response, but seeing that it has upset so many people, he has withdrawn the offer.

No one said that the offer was a scam.
But until the net becomes a safer place, usenet is not a very good place
to do this.
Set up a website and let us know by all means, but advertise the fact by
other means.
As far as withdrawing the offer goes, there are so many offers on the
Internet, that they get lost.
The best way to do this is by adding it to the google search engine.
Regarding hurt feelings, many have wondered why they were suddenly
infected.
Unfortunately the animals sneak in with the humans. This is what happens
regularly with "posers"
who pretend to help, when they are really scamming people. You dont have
to be paranoid to avoid being infected.
If you dont understand this by now, you should.
The nasty responses I have gotten by writing about this shows what I mean.
I repair computers part time and I see regular occurrences of this
happening.
People click on a link and its malicious.
I was not attacking anyone like you " if you're genuine", but safety is
paramount, and a genuine person who understand that.
