Strange how both Garden Force and Backyard Blitz featured very similar stories
this week. I wonder if the leak is with 7 or 9?

When you constantly combine synthetic drama, questionable technique and
fantasyland costing you are likely to get the same program not twice but
many times.

Wish these dickhead shows would come up to my place in Townsville, and do
something sensible......I"m always alert to a fee deal....

Why do they fix up these yuppie fux with even yuppier and totally
impractical gardens? ( Demolish the kids tree houses and lawn they used to
play cricket on, etc)

Mind you.....if I came home from a weekend away and found my garden in the
state they make some of those southern city yuppie backyards into, I'd smack
them all in the mouth.

Would THAT make good TV?

Well I don't really know the demographics of this newsgroup, but I don't
think I'm alone here in regional Australia by uttering my total boredom by
these idiot "lifestyle shows" we get on the telly here.

Fifteen years ago I lived and worked as a gardener in the eastern suburbs of
Melbourne, maintaining rich peoples gardens around Camberwell and Hawthorn,
doing design, landscape and all that. I'm now an in a totally different area
of work in North Queensland, and I've spent a lot of time in the north west
up here. Flying Doctors, to be precise, as an RN. Yet every where I go, we
still get these silly shows about people (with enough money to buy a couple
of cattle stations) , getting a free bullshit "make over" on their gardens.
And in the end they look WORSE! Know what I mean? Back yard
klutz.......changing rooms, Burkes back door, Auction Squid, and all the
rest .......

Please explain?

I'll go to bed now......

Even stranger is that A Current Affair and Today Tonight run identical
stories night after night, week after week. I have concluded that they
must reckon it is in their best interest to continue this way.

It's hardly in the viewer's interest.

It's called "competition". In order to compete, you must try to be as
similar as possible to all competing organisations. The banks do it, as do
commercial television stations, political parties, etc.

I suppose up-and-coming yuppie folk desire a garden that is even yuppier
than any of their yuppy neighbours' gardens, that's why. Ten to one the
makeover crews do take into account advice they get from the owner's
spouse and friends as to his/her needs and wishes for the yard. (There
has probably been some subtle questioning during preceeding weeks to
elicit a few ideas for the makeover crew to expand on.)

I agree that some of it seems quite impractical. The most impractical bit
is that someone who evidently has yet to master something as simple as
the use of a garden hose suddenly finds himself with $4000 of assorted
plants to nurture, water, and weed, with some in pots that will need
daily watering in mid-Summer. The most impractical things IMO are those
ornamental designs they manufacture out of timber. I picture it by the
end of its first summer to be warped and falling apart. But besides this
quibble, I don't see a lot to take issue with. (It's those gaudy room
makeovers that I think sometimes look better before than after!)

Mind you.....if I came home from a weekend away and found my garden in the
state they make some of those southern city yuppie backyards into, I'd smack
them all in the mouth.

Relax. If you already have a garden then they wouldn't get involved.
