could anyone tell if adding ashes from a wood fire boosts the acid level in
soil?
and if so how much do I use?
and if not what can I use

No. It does the opposite. Wood ash is alkaline and would thus raise
the pH. The traditional ways to lower the pH (i.e. increase the acid
level) of the soil was to use sulphur, iron sulphate or peat moss.
Talk to your local nursery/garden supply shop .
