g'day evan,

the birds nest will be real easy just lever it from it position if
it's in the ground dig it out leaving a root ball about the size of
the crown or bigger, also being this time of the year trim all fronds
off leave only fiddle heads, give it heaps of watering for a while as
it settles in.

now the tree fern that could be different at a guess i will say it's a
'cooperii' or similar, will depend ion the height of the plant to the
top of the crown, i moved one that was about a meter high with no
probs, just cut off all the fronds even the developing fiddle heads
but leave the crown alone. dig out the fern with a root ball about
twice the diameter of the trunk plant into new position just little
lower in the ground wrap the trunk with hession or foam rubber any
thing that will keep the trunk from drying out. set up a dripping hose
into the crown for about a week. also hose the trunk daily to keep the
moisture up keep the hession or foam damp as well.

if the tree fern is taller you may have to settle with just removing
the crown and about 18"s od so of the trunk also remove all fronds as
above, plant this about 6 or 8's into the ground and keep wet as
before. i use corse sand washed no salt or clay particles as backfill
when planting as suggested above this alows for drainage but also
provides for a damp loos medium for the new roots to take into.

if the tree fern was tall the old trunk can be used to mount orchids
or broms etc.,. you can move it and make it secure in another porition
of the garden, or firmly fix it into a large plant pot so you can
maube display it on your patio or even inside at times when things are
in flower.

of course if the tree fern is a dicksonia they are much easier to move
just trim off al fronds and plant as above suggested, no matter how
tall it is.

please forgive the typos' this time of the day the eyes aren't working
as well.

take care, happy new year

len.

Hi Evan,

I have done that as i'm too mean to pay full price and regularly scan half
price bins. I always transplant just on dusk and water and mulch well to
give them 12 hours of peace first. I try to shade them ... fold up chair,
cardboard box, shade cloth etc, and water a little each day then each
several days then once a week.

Actually our groundsman at school says that tree ferns burn from the top and
must be watered from the top. They are suseptible to hot days whatever their
condition.
